Chutney is an important ingredient in Indian dishes. Many of
us have eaten sweet mango chutney, sour mint chutney or hot
chilli chutney. But you've probably never tried chaprah (red ant
chutney)! A tribe from Bastar, in Chhattisgarh, collects tons of
stinging, biting ants and their eggs, which are crushed, dried and
ground into a powder. Tomatoes, cilantro, garlic, ginger, chilli,
salt and sugar are added to make the hot, spicy orange-coloured
chutney. If you don't mind eating ants, chaprah is very healthy
because the ants contain an acid with medicinal properties.
